1.) I don't know much about Star Trek, but I still want to join. Is that okay?
Yeah, it's totally fine! You don't need an encyclopedic knowledge of what we're covering in the current mission to be able to participate. There are plenty of stories to tell that don't rely heavily on background information.

2.) Do you have activity requirements?
Requirements? No. Guidelines? Sorta! Life can have an ebb and flow of demands, so sometimes you're more available than others. If you're tired or stressed, writing might not always be your preferred creative outlet. All we ask for is some degree of communication, particularly if you're writing with another person. It's okay to be frank about what's going on. "I just don't feel like writing" is a perfectly valid thing to experience. Our community is an avenue for creative expression and fun. It is not and never will be a second job.

3.) What does play-by-web mean? What is Nova? How is it different from forums & PBeM?
Play-by-web means this sim utilizes the Nova system developed by Anodyne Productions. Nova is an RPG management system with an online interface where players write posts, send messages, edit biographies, etc. It integrates all the features of previous forum & PBeM games into one central location utilizing one management software. You’ll receive login credentials when you join.

4.) What kind of culture does the Triton have?
Everyone here accepts the importance of a diverse writing community. We work hard to create an accepting and tolerant environment, and we are an LGBTQ-friendly simulation. We see ourselves as a community; we want our players to get to know one another and build the bonds of friendship that lead to better writing. This is not a punitive or restrictive environment. We bear in mind at all times that this is a creative outlet and a place for enjoyment.

5.) Can I play a position that isn't listed?
Absolutely! Just let us know what position you're interested in playing.

6.) Do I need any experience to join?
No experience is needed. This simulation is open to all people who have a love for Star Trek and writing regardless of their level of experience with the genre and the game.

7.) What is the in-game year?
The game takes place in 2396.

8.) Do you allow custom races?
Absolutely, so long as it reasonably follows the story and guidelines established by Obsidian Fleet. As an example, you might be hard-pressed to justify an omnipotent porpoise race from the Delta quadrant battling the Q for divine supremacy. But a Karemma? No problem.

9.) How are awards & promotions handled?
Awards are handed out at the conclusion of every mission by the commanding officer. You can nominate a fellow writer at any time for an award. Your awards are meant to be your badges of honor and the primary way we highlight your contributions. Rank promotions are given over time as the story and participation allow. (If you want to climb the ranks to rub shoulders with Admiral Nechayev then you might be waiting awhile.)

10.) What happens when I can't post frequently?
If you suspect you aren’t going to be able to post frequently, just let us know. We understand things come up and for some people they come up often. We focus on quality over quantity and respect that our players have real life commitments that come before simming. We also ask that players consider the needs of the game and the story - if you're going to be away relatively often then we might ask that you allow someone else to temporarily serve as the acting head of a department to keep the story going.

11.) What is an LOA?
A leave of absence, which indicates you will not be active for a set length of time. You can set this activity status for your account in Nova.

12.) What is a Joint Post?
A joint post is a story post written by more than one player. They’re highly encouraged!

13.) I have a question that was not listed...
We love questions! Ask away in our Discord channel.
